Final Project

I will be working with Daniella and Sara.  We are going to give a video instruction on how to teach reading to children.  The three methods we are going to use are LEA, DRTA, and Shared Book Reading.  I am excited to create these videos because I think that a lot of my classmates will appreciate seeing a practical way of teaching reading to students in their future classmates.

We are planning to go to Sara’s classroom where she interned, and video each of us teaching reading using a method.  I am excited to get back into the classroom.  I have missed being in a classroom and teaching students.  Unfortunately, I have not been able to get back to my internship classroom very often.

I am planning on preparing for this assignment by doing reading about the reading method that I will be teaching, LEA.  Also, I will write out a lesson plan and go over it with my classmates.  I think that this assignment will be really useful for me in the future and hopefully for others.

Interview with Charlotte

Charlotte is a friend of mine.  She is a homestay student in grade 12.  Charlotte is from China and she said that I could interview her about her education experiences in China and Canada.

Here is the interview!

Me:  Tell me about your education experience in China?

Charlotte:  I lived at my school in China.  We would wake up each morning at 6:00 am to be at our first class by 6:30 am.  I had five classes in the morning and three classes in the afternoon.  After supper each day I had study hall for three hours.

Me:  Was this a good experience for you?

Charlotte:  This was not a good experience because everyone was very tired because we did not get a lot of sleep.  Often students would sleep through class.

Me:  How were you disciplined?

Charlotte:  The teachers would send you home or call your family and tell them what you have done.

Me:  How did your teachers in China use technology in the classroom?

Charlotte:  The teachers had powerpoint presentations for almost every class because there was so many notes to take.  We wrote out all the notes.

Me:  What is the best and worst parts of education in Canada?

Charlotte:  The best part of education in Canada is that students can choose what classes they are interested in and wanted to take.  I have not found anything to be the worst part of education in Canada.

Me:  How do you stay connected with your family and friends in China?

Charlotte:  I use Skype every night to chat face to face with my family and friends.  I also use Twitter, MSN and Facebook to communicate.

Me:  What are your future education plans?

Charlotte:  I plan to go to the University of Regina.  I will take business at university.  I plan on staying in Canada for now and possibly for the future.

I found this interview very interesting.  I enjoy learning about other education experiences.  I am continually amazed at students that are EAL learners.  These students often succeed in education even though they go through so much trials.  They must learn a new culture and language and they are away from their family and friends for a long period of time.  I hope you find this as interesting as I found this interview.

Do You Teach or Educate?

Watch this video!

After watching this video think back to your education experience.  Were you taught or educated?  I think that it is easier for the teacher to teach information, but to teach the student to critically think and inquire is a lot more difficult.  I know growing up I was taught with rote teaching.  Information was given to me and I was not taught how to experience learning.

To fast forward to today, I know the kind of teacher that I want to be.  I want to learn as much from my students as they learn from me.  I want my students to take risks and try new things even if they don’t work.

What kind of teacher do you want to become?

Man vs. Computer

Jeopardy has an interesting series of three shows on this week.  They are taking the two top Jeopardy players of all time and facing them off against an IBM computer named Watson.  This is the ultimate Man vs. Computer….who will be smarter?  The series began yesterday and Watson and Brad are tied with the lead after single Jeopardy.  Computers have become an essential part of the modern life.  I am finding it interesting that it is even possible for a human to beat a computer.  I think the only reason for this being possible is problems with the programming because the computer should be able to answer any question immediately.

I will blog later this week when the results are in.  Will the computer be smarter than man?

Watch as Watson prepares for battle against humans!

World’s On Fire

This is a video and song by Sarah Maclachlan called World’s On Fire.  In this video, she talks about how normally she might spend $150 000 on a music video but this one she spent $15.  The video talks about many different ways that $150 000 can be spent elsewhere.  I watched this video many years ago but it made an impact on my life.  I think about how much money I spend and how there are so many people on this earth that cannot afford an education.

Watch this video and I hope that it helps you to realize how fortunate we are to live in Canada.  A place where getting an education is a right!  I hope that we can share this with our future students, to let them know how lucky we are to live in Canada.
